Prince George’s County Civic Federation meets at 7:30 at Kettering Middle School.
The agenda includes the new business: Nomination/Vote for Federation Cup & Elected School Board Discussion/Request for $
Our board member who gives us Education reports will be at the following event:
WHAT: Community Meeting to Kickoff Petition Drive for Referendum
WHEN: Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 7:00 p.m.
WHERE: 8000 Marlboro Pike, Forestville MD 20747 (PGCEA building)
In the next few days Citizens for an Elected Board (CEB) will begin circulating petitions to force Rushern Baker’s school takeover bill to referendum at the November 2014 general election.
We will need more than 8,000 signatures by May 31 to stop the bill from going into effect on June1. If we then get a total of about 25,000 signatures by June 30 (including the ones from May), the bill would be on hold pending the referendum.
This is going to take a lot of hard work from dedicated people like you. To kick things off, we need you and everyone you know to come to Thursday’s meeting; please bring your friends and neighbors. Debbie Sell, president of Prince Georgeans for an Informed Citizenry and a member of our coalition since 2002, is leading the petition drive and will brief us on how to make sure every signature will count.
Starting in 2001, CEB fought then-Delegate Baker when he took away our voting rights for School Board. After 5 years, we finally won that fight. We are not going to let him get away with it this time as he tries to make himself czar of our school system!
We don’t need partisan politics dictating the education of our children. We don’t need a superintendent, hand-picked by Baker, who can close schools and change boundaries with no public input. We don’t need last-minute back-room deals that cut Prince George’s County residents out of the conversation about how our schools will be governed.
If you have questions about the petition drive or the meeting, please contact Debbie at danzidora@yahoo.com, phone 301-809-5825 (home) or 301-928-9267 (cell). For background, history, or other matters, please contact Dave or Jan (see below).
The important thing is for as many people as possible to show up on Thursday, to put Rushern Baker on notice that the people of Prince George’s County will not let him take over our schools without a fight.
Please repost to all lists.
Thank you.
